I wrote my tips on Holistic Ways to Increase your Immune System for this is the time of year when most people are prone to illness. Have you ever stopped to wonder why that may be? Of course the obvious thinking is it’s cold outside so your body’s defense system has to fight harder against growing bacteria in winter months. The lack of sun which is needed for Vitamin D synthesis that help regulate the immune system and neuromuscular system is of course an issue.
Another way of thinking would be that most people stay indoors, close to other people spreading germs more easily while in the summer people are spread out both inside and out and in more remote locations. Whatever your theories are, here are a few ways to boast your immune system .
YES! I am talking about good old fashion homemade bone broth. We could stay here for the entire article and talk about the benefits of bone broth (maybe next time), but for the purpose of this, I am sticking to a few points.
To increase your immune system this really needs to be homemade, pre-made from a store will not work as well. The reason is the spices added to the broth will help pull minerals like calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and potassium out of the bone that are in the simplest form for your body to absorb and amino acids like glycine and proline from the meat.
These amino acids are important for muscle repair and growth, balanced nervous system. The last thing I want to mention is the gelatin, otherwise known as “Liquid Gold” This is the break down of collagen from the bones. This will help heal leaky gut, reduce inflammation, ease joint and arthritic pain just to name a few.

Another option when increasing your immune system, this is best used as a proactive measure rather than a reactive one. This vitamin is an antioxidant so it helps protect damage to the eye, artery walls of the heart and lungs, helps in collagen production which will aid in leaky gut and help heal the lining of membranes throughout your body.
Vit C also acts as a natural antihistamine that will naturally lower any excess histamine found within your body. Normal levels of histamine will attack any foreign invaders by producing inflammation, however excess histamine will show chronic inflammation which will weaken the immune’s response.
This is another huge category that can be personal depending on symptoms. However there are 3 that really stand out and can help almost everyone improve their immunity.
Oregano (oil or leaf)
The oil is definitely more powerful so if your really feeling like you are “coming down with something, this would be a great way to fight off any impeding intruders, otherwise oregano spices or leaves used in cooking is a great preventative.
Inside the body, oregano acts an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant.
Ginger (oil, tea, stalk)
In many ways, ginger has the same healing properties as oregano oil. It is an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, but it is also immune boosting for it heats up the organs internally (much like how hot yoga works). By heating the organs internally, you are essentially detoxifying from the inside out and secreting toxins found deep within the body’s cells and organs and are eliminated through the skin.
This is another fabulous way to boost your Immune System. Milk thistle is a natural detoxifier for your liver. If you recall, your liver is the organ that detoxifies your entire body, from blood, to organs to neurotransmitters.
By adding milk thistle, you are assisting your liver to maximize its detoxifying function. When you are sick (or getting sick) your liver will be working overtime to detox these potential pathogens from invading the body or cells.
Dry brushing is great to help rid toxins through the skin and help stimulate Lymphatic movement. The Lymphatic System has no pump to move toxins through the body (like the Cardiovascular System which uses the heart to pump blood and nutrients through the body) so dry brushing helps stimulate movement and secretion of these toxins. One could hold a strong argument that sleep is one of the easiest overlooked aid in boosting one’s overall health. Sleep, like bone broth, has many beneficial factors, but for today’s purpose, we will talk about one major issue, the hormonal imbalance induced by lack of sleep.
There are so many organs and tissues effected by the lack of sleep. One is your melatonin that regulates your Circadian Rhythm, this in disturbance will prevent you from getting into the deep REM sleep.
Even more importantly would be sleep for your adrenal and Thyroid’s. Lack of sleep with cause adrenal and Thyroid exhaustion thus leaving the body week and defense mechanism’s low. Getting a min of 8 hours of sleep a night is ideal.
Overall, there are many different ways one can help boost your immune system. Any way we can help our body find it’s homeostasis through nutrition, exercise, mentally or emotional clarity, we are supporting all functions of the body, with the immune system being one of them.
The single and best approach to enhance your immunity and decrease your chance of any disease is to live life as a preventative approach. It is much easier (and less expensive) to prevent something from happening then it is to reverse something once its in your body.
